While witnessing the Kanamara Matsuri, it was also the only time I went out to take pictures of Sakura this Spring.

Sakuras bloom almost everywhere in Japan. Cherry Blossom trees are greatly adored here even though they go into fruition only for around 2 weeks. For the Japanese, this represents life's fleeting moment.

Being an expat here in Japan has given me more chance to meet and to mingle with different kinds of people. From any social gathering created via photography clubs, forums and even friends' birthday parties, it's a perfect way to gain acquaintances and friends.

People you suddenly meet tend to come and go, and that's why it's great to have a camera at hand on these social events.

Here is a picture of Ruben, a former military man during the times of the HUKBALAHAP. He has already shifted towards working in the corporate world as a consultant, and now officially resides in Australia with his family. It has been nice having a conversation with him regarding his life experiences, my hometown (Baguio City, as he was a PMAer) and others. I was particularly interested about his transition from military to corporate, as I had once dreamt of having a career in the military. =P

Had my first experience at a Philippine "resto", ate good food -> tabehoudai (食べ放題) or "All You Can Eat" for just 1000yen. (Typical meals when eating out at fastfoods would cost around 700yen and above.)

The place had a simple setup, which greatly resembles the typical closed door eateries found back in the Philippines. They also serve beer and have a special videoke machine, not the typical arcade-looking type we are more familiar with. And of course, last but not the least, they have disco lights. So it's basically an eatery, beerhouse, videoke box, disco bar all rolled into one.

The towers supporting the bridge are white in color, designed to harmonize with the skyline of central Tokyo seen from Odaiba. There are lamps placed on the wires supporting the bridge, which are illuminated into three different colors, red, white and green every night using solar energy obtained during the day. I am fond of taking candid pictures; of strangers and friends. I use a mid-telephoto (50-150mm focal range) lens for these type of shots; quite fun always doing it in stealth mode.

Found this pachinko parlor at Shibuya.

Pachinko (パチンコ^?) is a Japanese gaming device used for amusement and prizes. Although pachinko machines were originally strictly mechanical, modern pachinko machines are a cross between a pinball machine and a video slot machine. (wiki)

These pachinkos seem to be very addicting as they are as abundant as Mcdonalds stores here in Japan. I think even in the most rural places in Japan, there lies a pachinko parlor around. There are even jobs such as pachinko engineers and journalists.

Tadaima(?)

"Tadaima" is a Japanese expression which means "I'm home". This had been one of my oftenly used YM status message everytime I reach my apartment at Kasukabe. Coming back from my rather short vacation in the Philippines, it's kind of weird to use "tadaima". Home to me is definitely in the Philippines, not here in Japan.

Fortunately, I was able to catch the last train going towards my apartment. I've heard many stories about Cebu Pacific's numerous flight delays but surprisingly, our flight arrived at Japan about 30 minutes early. Not to mention, our plane departed NAIA about 20 minutes late (2pm instead of 140pm as listed in our tickets). The first flight to the Philippines wasn't bad either. We arrived at NAIA 3 at the exact time listed, although technically, I was out of the airport only about 20 minutes later (due to immigration, baggage lines, etc).

I've already experienced all 3 NAIA terminals as I've already ridden 3 different carriers (PAL, JAL, Cebu Pacific). Lucky for CP, they're the sole international carrier at NAIA 3, so processing is quite fast and organized. Although JAL would be my first choice of airline to Japan, NAIA 1 just gives you the OFW-ish feeling, especially outside at the waiting area. Arrivals at terminals 2 and 3 were a breeze (especially when someone would pick you up by car).

Thank God for the 30 minute headstart, we were able to get out of Kansai airport at around 630pm (supposedly, our plane would have yet landed by this time). Also, thanks to Alaine, who is quite the shinkansen (bullet train) veteran, I was able to board the nozomi train (only 1 per hour; bullet train with the least number of stops); thus, was able to arrive at Tokyo at about 11pm. The last train from Kita Senju going to Kasukabe was scheduled at around 12MN and I was able to ride at around 1130pm.

And so at last, I was at the apartment at around 1230MN. However, I couldn't figure out the combination of switches in our circuit breaker. Well, since it was already late (or should I say very early in the morning), I was forced to sleep, which was actually ideal since I still have to report to work the next day. The following morning, power was finally restored. A well-rested brain definitely works better than a tired one.

I've got lots of photo backlogs, and hopefully I could upload and blog about it asap. Seems like I'll be in a blogging spree for the first few weeks. There are too many things to blog about in the Philippines, good and bad. Here in Japan, life is limited to just work-apartment. Good thing there are these weekend escapades (and the internet!) to help keep me sane! :)

Short-lived Vacation

Will fly back to Japan tomorrow afternoon, hopefully would arrive as early as possible. Expected time of arrival at the airport is 640pm. Assuming no delays (please CebuPac!!!!) I hope we could get past the airport gates at around 730pm (hoping the immigration lines wouldn't be slow).

From the Kansai airport, we would travel about an hour via train to get to Shin Osaka, where the bullet train towards Tokyo starts. We should be there before 9pm or else no more shinkansen ride for the night. I no longer know any other alternative available that does not need prior reservations.

Target time of arrival at Tokyo should be around 11pm-ish. Latest possible for me would be around 1130pm or else I'd be stuck at Kita Senju assuming the 12mn last train towards Kasukabe left without me.

I really hope I wouldn't start the year in Japan getting stuck at a train station, waiting for the 5am train. It's cold out there, that the Baguio flu I'm carrying might mutate into something more drastic.

Ahh, consequences of taking budget flights (even miles away from where I live). Oh well, I guess it was a no choice decision for me since I had to go home before Xmas day (for the Tagaytay wedding).

This is going to be a tough one.

Plus, it's workday the next day.

Asakusa is a district in Tokyo, widely known for its Buddhist temple, Senso-ji, and the host of traditional events such as the Sanja Matsuri (festival) and the Sumida River Fireworks. Aside from that, every year by the end of August, the Asakusa Samba Carnival has been one of the most anticipated summer events in Tokyo.

A meetup between Filipinos in Japan, mostly composed of photohobbyists and our host, ate Maki's nearby friends in Shizuoka. It was a free-for-all shoot wherein the models do anything they want (re: pose) and the photographers shoot whatever they can focus on. Basically a just-for-fun shoot, despite having our models wear makeup and costumes.

Xtin, who agreed to pose for us while wearing a yellow kimono, had no idea on what kinds of poses she ought to do. As for us photographers, we cared less on whatever pose a model would do. Anything can be caught picture perfect.

The Tokuma EB is my very first 'model' photoshoot event. Special thanks to all of our models who were all game and fun to shoot at. We were very much trigger happy that the amateurs in us didn't even think of directing the models. Thus, the burden had always been on them. :)

Autumn Light-up at the Rikugien Garden-- Komagome, Tokyo -- Nov 29 2008

Rikugien is one of Tokyo's most beautiful, Japanese style landscape gardens. Built around 1700 by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, Rikugien literally means "six poems garden" and reproduces in miniature 88 scenes from famous poems. (Japan Guide)

Rikugien garden is only usually open from 9am to 430pm. But, in celebration for the Autumn season, they hold an event termed as "Light-up" that extends closing time up to 9pm. Illumination events such as this are quite common in Japan, which aims to encourage visitors to appreciate the beauty of parks and shrines at night.

Though the closing time of Rikugien had been extended, only a part of the whole garden area were made accessible for the light-up. Quite the center of attraction would have been the central pond on the north shore. On it is the Horaijima, a small island in the pond made of stones, created based on a form of mysticism aimed at attaining supernatural power (according to a pamphlet).

For Japanese and foreign tourists alike, one can appreciate the beauty of the Rikugien while sipping a cup of traditional Japanese tea. These tea house, known as Fukiage-chaya (Fukiage Teahouse) overlooks the central pond on the north shore.

Thanks to Shaffie for lending me one of his tripods, I was able to practice night photography using long exposures on this event. I am still on the lookout for the 'perfect' tripod (not to be too cheap, not too costly, most reliable in use). I used an old SLIK tripod, and it was quite really heavy. Without a spirit level, it was also hard to orient the camera especially on uneven grounds. Also, I've learnt that I should have used a lower ISO, and ramped up on longer exposures instead, hehe (was using auto-ISO max 800 at the beginning).

I guess that ends my Autumn experience for this year. Good thing I was able to join last week's Takao trip; or else I wouldn't have Autumn day shots. I wonder what's in store for me during winter... well at least I'm going to spend most of my December in the Philippines. :D

I seldom do slow shutter shots because it requires stable support for the camera (even the slightest hand shake could ruin the shot). Haven't owned a tripod yet, good thing I was able to borrow Kate's gorillapod.

Slow shutter shots on water currents emphasize movement, producing a smoothened flow just like the one in this picture. In my previous post of another water shot (Kegon Falls), I used faster shutter speed, showing a rough fall of water from above the ridge.

My first experience on a beach in Japan. Summer season in Japan really is hot and so lots of people hit the beach or go to resorts to cool off. The place we went to (Kugenuma Kaigan) has got nice mellow waves; thus, bodyboarding became the main activity for beachgoers especially for kids and surfing newbies.

Beaches here in Japan aren't that much striking as compared to those in the Philippines (with white sands, blue waters, etc...). Perhaps Okinawa would be an exception though, since I've already seen pictures of some of its beaches.

I've actually never been to the popular beaches in the Philippines (Boracay, Subic, etc). I was hoping I could hit the beaches this December when I come home, but it turned out I have no extra time and company to go with. Maybe next year. *sigh*

One thing I like in Japan is that there are about at least a holiday each month, plus week-long breaks during summer and winter. This is, of course, to encourage people here to take some rest once in a while as working long hours during weekdays is the norm.

Last Aug 2 (my summer vacation), we went to Kugenuma Beach , located along the shores of the Shonan Coast (said to be the home of surfing in Japan). Kugenuma Kaigan is being labeled as the birthplace of Japanese beach volleyball (in fact there was an ongoing tournament during that week).

I have to say, beaches in the Philippines are more beautiful than in Japan. I guess what makes Japan's beaches exciting are the Japanese ladies in bikinis :D, and surfing. Haven't tried to surf yet, only bodyboarding. :)

Above picture was taken by Kiks, when he borrowed my cam (most pics he took were those of ladies in bikinis :D). Twas really a hot, hot summer, though perfect for sunbathers like the guy featured. His group had not rented a parasol, and the guy was even lying face down on the sand, without a mat. Well, I guess the Japanese do like to have darker complexion as exemplified by the ganguro girls.

Right after the team company BBQ party (see flickr post #41), I went straight to Asakusa, Tokyo to witness one of Japan's biggest Fireworks Display (hanabi = fireworks). I still don't own a tripod, which is an essential gear in taking great long exposure shots (not to mention night pics), and so I've decided to take pictures of people instead.

While waiting with friends, I lent Meema my cam as she wanted to try my relatively new lens. She took this picture of the lady whose group was just about one lot away from us (people reserve spaces as early as 7am just to view the firewoks at 7pm). On certain events such as this (fireworks viewing), most Japanese ladies wear the traditional yukata which really looks great on them.

Whenever our Section Chief calls for a bonding activity for his team, it is usually over food and beer. Just before the start of the summer break (1 week vacation!), we had a so-called BBQ party at Shimizu (Park)Koen's day camp grounds , located in Chiba Prefecture (just a few train stations away from work/home actually).

Here is a shot of one of our team mates, Kanno-san, sporting the usual David Bowie look. Since most of them were camera-shy, I had to take candids, and this is what I got.

I started playing lawn tennis on my 2nd year in college. Back then, I felt like I had to graduate from my Table Tennis days (my main sport at elementary school) and advance towards the 'real' and bigger court.

I believe that in order to improve my game, I have to play with someone better. However, it is always the lack of a tennis playmate that keeps me from advancing. Even now that I'm in Japan, I am having a hard time looking for playmates close to my area.

One time, I had no choice but to travel about 1.5 hours via train in order to play tennis with some friends living in Western Tokyo. Oh, I miss my college days when the tennis court was just a stone throw's away from my dormitory.

Japanese religious festivals (aka 'matsuri') are usually based on Shinto, and one of the main events during a matsuri is the carrying of Mikoshi(s). As defined from wiki: "A Mikoshi is a portable Shinto shrine that serves as a vehicle of a divine spirit in Japan. During a Matsuri(festival), these Mikoshis are carried over the shoulders by a group of people with the use of poles."

Mikoshi carrying somewhat looks like the bayanihan imagery of Filipinos, however, with an added twist of fun and competition. Several groups participate and carry their own portable shrines (Mikoshi). Throughout the course, they carry the Mikoshi and swing/sway it so that the little bells inside would chime. They say the rowdiest and most fun group wins.

On the 2nd day of the Kasukabe Summer Festival, I first went to Shinjuku to buy the 50-150mm f2.8 Sigma lens then went straight back home to Kasukabe to have a "break-in" of the newly 'toy'. Compared to the 1st day, I was able to take lots pics of random strangers; and because of my new lens' wide aperture at f2.8, was able to enhance the depth of field of my shots.

I had positioned myself on one corner to take pictures of random people passing through the whole event. I was able to take a shot of this lady who was roughly about 4 meters away from me as she was talking to someone via her 'keitai' (cellphone).

For about 6 months, I had been using the lone 18-55mm kit lens, and was kind of frustrated when taking candid shots of people since this lens is a bit short in range. When shooting closely, you would be easily be noticed; thus, capturing the desired moment would be difficult.

So, for shy people like me who wants to take pictures of people (i.e. event, street), the safest way is to take shots from behind. :)

October Bday Celebrants@Club 105-- Keio-Nagayama, Tokyo -- October 25

The 'Kaladkaran group' recently had a 'house party' for the October birthday celebrants at Justin&Mark's apartment (aka Club 105, name derived from their room apartment's number). There were 3 of us celebrating our bdays this October, and the good thing here in Japan for bday celebrants is that we enjoy free treats from friends (unlike in the Philippines wherein the celebrants usually give treat to the wellwishers).
In house parties such as this, it's actually some sort of a potluck party wherein the attendees bring in drinks, food, et al; then afterwards, everyone shares the cost except for the bday celebrant/s and the house hosts (all receipts to be gathered, and the costs to be distributed evenly).
The drinking session started at about 730pm with various kinds of liquor and food: Asahi beer, Chu-hi, Baileys, Cassis, Jose Cuervo, Martini; chicken, yakitori, 'limited edition' gravy (by Lau), soup (c/o Regilyn), etc.
After the drinking session, we went to the game center and played bowling, table tennis, and some of the available game machines. The center was open up to 6am, just the perfect place to spend time while waiting for the first train in the morning (530am). As for me, Keio-Nagayama is approximately 2 hours away via train from my apartment.

Attendees: Lau, Gabby, Tinats, Ish, Khen, M, Aileen, Geoff, Jhong, Vanush, Jac, Justin, Mark, Regilyn, Jem & Tha. Thanks for the company, guys! Also, Happy Birthday to Benny and Tha!

As usual, everytime I go out (non work-related) I always bring my cam. I used the 18-55mm kit lens since my 50-150mm would be too long a lens for indoor apartment shots (plus the kit lens is much lighter). Quite had a hard time determining the correct settings to use. I had no choice but to use high ISO and built-in flash. Really wish I have an external flash. I'm putting the Nikon SB-600 in my wishlist. Any sponsors? Bday gift or Xmas. :D

*I'm inserting some Akihabara pics taken the week before, since I was only able to take just a few shots (couldn't comprise a full album). Also, special thanks to JB for treating me out with Ramen at Akiba.

About a year ago, I was sort of disappointed at Satte City (location of our first apartment) because the place was so boring as compared to the very interesting Tokyo life. After our initial stay for 3 months, we were given the chance to choose a new location and we chose Kasukabe City (infamous for anime series such as Crayon Shin-chan and Lucky Star).

We were actually hoping that our new apartment would be at Kasukabe City's west side (with reference to the Kasukabe train station) where there's lots of activity due to flourishing businesses such as restaurants, pachinko parlors, etc. Unfortunately, our company director got us some space on Kasukabe-East instead. Another boring, purely residential place.

However, during Japan's summer season (June-August), Kasukabe celebrated its 'Natsu Matsuri' (read: summer festival) and the primary location for that event was right on our side of Kasukabe. =) It was nice to experience going out and enjoying the streets without having to go to Tokyo.

The Kasukabe Natsu Matsuri was held for 2 days. On the first day, I tried to take lots of pictures with my old and trusty kit lens (18-55mm). While on the second day, I rushed to Shinjuku to buy my current walkaround 50-150mm lens, then immediately went back home to shoot more.

After the Philippine Day event at Oji Park, we went to T.G.I. Friday's at Ueno for dinner. While waiting for our food, we saw some staff delivering a specialized treat courtesy of the establishment while singing a "Hapi- Baus-dei" (Happy Bday) song to a lady.

Not to be outdone, we readily played a game (forgot what it was) wherein Kate ended up losing. As a consequence, she would be the pretend-bday girl for the day while one of our companions, Wena, volunteered to request for "Kate's treat". I think what Wena did should have been THE consequence though, I guess Wena was just too excited. hehe

*Kate's bday was actually within that month (about a week later), so technically, we were already celebrating her birthday in advance; thus, no harm done towards the establishment. =P

At the first half of my stay here in Japan, I was almost always cooped up in my apartment during weekends. Since I was assigned to a client location far away from most of the people I know here in Japan, I rarely go out and instead just enjoy free time in front of the computer. I did buy my DSLR as motivation for myself to go out and shoot. However, with just the kit lens on hand, I was still a bit lazy to go out.

There were only a few major outings and events that I was able to join/attend within that first half. One of which was the Philippine Day at Oji Park. It was my first time to eat Philippine food in months, and also the biggest crowd of Filipinos I had ever seen in Japan.

The picture above features the closing performance for the whole day's event. Quite funny because when I took this picture about 4 months ago, I didn't know any of them (except for Kaye Brosas and Piolo Pascual who were guest celebrities). Now, I could point out familiar faces in this picture as I've already had an encounter with most of them just recently.

On the far left is lawyer-blogger Ryo (aka Atty in recent picture posts), who was a companion in recent photo trips; 2 singers (bald headed guy, and red dress woman) who performed just recently at the Utawit event's opening number (see related pics on Photos page--Utawit); a government official, et al. Looks like the Jazz singer Charito is also there in the picture. :P

Lately, I've already met lots of people; thus, being able to go out a lot more. Thanks to my newfound friends and also to my reliable 'non-kit lens', I've been going out almost every weekend already -- as compared to before when I consider myself lucky if I go out at least once a month. :D

Without friends, photography, holidays, weekends... I could have lost my sanity here in Japan. =P

This is the 90-degree drop of the "Eejanaika" ride at Fuji-Q Highlands. It is classified as a 4-dimension rollercoaster because aside from the usual normal/upside-down/sideways loop, the seats also rotate vertically; thus, giving you a '4d' perspective. This is actually my favorite of all rides. I really love the part where the seats turn vertically backward and you have no choice but to see the world upside down.

I seldom eat outside (at fastfoods/restaurants) since we have subsidized food at our client company's canteen. Set meals there are great and costs relatively cheap at an average of 480yen (Php200) per meal. Regular bento meals (commercialized packed lunch) costs around the same, but at least food at the canteen are healthier and more complete -- rice, miso soup and a healthy viand (sometimes with side dishes too).

At home, we always do the cooking (for dinner and on weekends); thus saving a lot more money. Eating out usually costs around at least 1000yen (~Php420), and that only happens when I go outside on weekends. Japanese fastfoods/restaurants are no longer limited to washoku (traditional Japanese food), as Western-style cooking is already available on the menu. Like that of Saizeriya's meals depicted on the picture above.

The Golden Ticket -- December Vacation

I should've blogged about this weeks ago, but I guess it's only now that I have some time to do so. Since early August, I had been searching for cheap December roundtrip tickets to the Philippines in time for the winter break here in Japan. Initially, I had been assured of an open-ended ticket till Dec 19; but then unfortunately, there had been changes in company policies that ended up revoking my available ticket to be replaced with a fixed amount instead. We were only informed of the new policy at the start of the summer vacation (early August), and so it was only during that time that I was able to start canvassing (mid August) for ticket prices and its corresponding schedules. December is indeed a peak season for flights to and from Japan since it is affected by the Xmas rush towards different celebrating countries, plus the weeklong winter break at the end of the year.

I thought August was still a bit early to book for December flights, but I was wrong. Assuming off peak roundtrip rates would be about 40-50k Yen (~Php17k-21k), the cheapest rate I got was already at 107k Yen (~Php45k, Northwest Airlines) and it is even scheduled on Dec 27-Jan14 departure-arrival date. Other airlines offering direct flight from Narita costs even more at 130kYen and above. This is such an overkill. (Image taken from H.I.S. travel agency)

On the 26th of December, 2 of my college friends are going to be married with each other and I was really looking forward to attend this big event. This is also going to be one big reunion for all of us, since I have not seen most of them for over a year now. As expected from Glenn and May, this would probably be one of the best weddings we could witness within our batch. This I can not miss! (image from their weddingannouncer site)

And so, even though we already had applied for work leaves within the Dec27-Jan14 schedule, I was still searching for cheaper and more convenient dates that would let me be able to attend the wedding. I didn't want to tell May that I had problems with my flight schedule since she might cancel her earlier invitation for me (I'm still in, right? :P).

Alas, right in the nick of time, just before we were scheduled to pay the earlier bookings; Cebu Pacific had just opened airways between Manila and Osaka. It was already mid September when they offered their promo flights. Geoff and his group were able to buy roundtrip tickets at 43k Yen (~Php18k). I wasn't able to purchase yet since I don't have a credit card to book online plus, I had to ask permission from my boss first for the change in work leaves' dates.

I agreed to join Geoff's group and so I applied for change of leaves within the Dec18-Jan4 time frame. Osaka is about 9 hours away by bus (2.5hours by bullet train) from Tokyo, I do need companions for the long trip. Quite unfortunately, it took about 2 days before I got one of my bosses' nod (for my leave application) that the price skyrocketed a bit to 63k Yen(Php26k)! That's about Php8k loss! Anyway, I had decided I shall attend the wedding, and so with the help of my Uncle in the Philippines, paid for flight tickets on that date. whew, at last!

So this is final. My Xmas vacation in the Philippines would be from Dec 18 to Jan 4 (return to Japan). I do still have some slight dilemma, since most of my friends are in Manila but my immediate family resides in Baguio City (Benguet).

To my friends back there: my initial plan is to go home straight to Baguio upon arrival (Dec 18), Dec 25/26 - go down back to Manila for the Dec 26 wedding, after spending a few days with '01 friends after the wedding -- will go back up to Baguio and enjoy the new year with my family. I hope you guys could help me fill in the blanks in between my travels back and forth Baguio-Manila. If you guys have plans within that Xmas break, let me know so I can arrange my schedule. I really want to explore our beaches there but it seems schedule might not fit in.

Any suggestions? ;-)

Golden Week is characterized by a series of National holidays in Japan which in effect would give quite a long break (at most 1 week) from work. As my work partner went home to the Philippines, I attended the BBQ party hosted by our company president, which was held at the company dormitory in Center Kita, Yokohama. Aside from the usual izakayas (Japanese pub - drinking sessions), BBQ parties are common for employer/boss-employee/subordinates bonding.

Grilled foods are also very popular in the Philippines, which you can readily see being sold on the streets: pork barbecue, liver, chicken gut (isaw), hotdogs, etc. I don't know with other countries, but here in Japan, they even grill vegetables such as: bell pepper, onions, eggplants, corn (in cobs), mushrooms etc. Now, I don't see that one being done in the Philippines. Maybe because we really are just meat lovers? hehehe.

The last of my featured Nikko series.

Lake Chuzenji is a scenic lake in Nikkō National Park in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The lake has a surface area of 11.62 km² and a circumference of 25 km. Its elevation at the surface is 1,269 m, and the water reaches a depth of 163 m. Water drains through the Kegon Falls.

We came here at around 2-3pm, right after viewing Kegon Falls. Light coming from the sun was harsh for our photography. Too bad the boat cruise wasn't available during that time.

This is the Kegon Falls. At 97 m high, it is one of Japan's three highest waterfalls. We had to pay 530yen (~Php210++) just to have a 100m elevator ride towards the lower view deck. Aside from the Toshogu Shrine, this is another landmark in Nikko one should never miss.

This was spotted in between shrine venues (as Nikko has several of them in one location). There was no one (vendor) in sight except for this black cat, guarding the wares. Since this is Japan, it is most probably safe to handle this kind of gimmick as most Japanese are proud of their honesty and discipline.

The famous three wise monkeys ("sanzaru" in Japanese).

According to wiki, these carvings were the main source that popularized the famous maxim of the monkeys. These were carved over a door of a stable (Shinkyu) within the Toshogu shrine vicinity and it is dated way back from the 17th century.

There are no paintings on the Shinkyu. Sculptures of Sansaru "Three Monkeys" were put on the crossbars instead. The Sansaru consists of 8 panels like a picture book. Monkeys had been treated as guardians of horses since early times. Therefore, there was a custom to keep monkeys in the stable until Muromachi period.

This place in Nikko is where the most famous Toshogu shrine (Shinto shrine that enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu) is located; also one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

The Yomeimon Gate is the most famous work of architecture in Nikko; thus, oftenly representing the place in tourist posters and pamphlets.

Due to the reasons stated above, I tried my best to salvage this shot (originally underexposed on the front) as these are the types of shots one should never miss.

For my first few months stay in Japan, I was just always stuck at home doing nothing. Aside from the interest in photography kicking in, I decided to buy myself a camera as motivation for me to go out whenever I'm free. Thanks to my Astra friends (colleagues working from a sister company), I got to join them on different outings. I rarely have pictures on my uploaded sets but good thing most of them are also camera owners, so we take pictures of each other every now and then.

On the 2nd day of our Spring weekend travel, we checked out early (Nikko Park Lodge) and went straight towards the Kanmangafuchi Abyss in order to drop by at the famed Nikko jizou site. Jizou (Jizō) is known for being a guardian of unborne babies, thus, statues representing his divinity are often portrayed as wearing children's clothing such as bibs.

Narabi-jizou literally means Jizous in line. Another name for this site is Bake-jizou where 'bake' means ghost. They say that the count of jizous placed on this site had never been consistent, implying that the jizou statues appear and disappear at times.

Tokuma Photoshoot Outing

It's quite amazing that I am able to go out frequently nowadays. Thanks to photography. I have met lots of cam-toting friends here in Japan and it's really easy to bond with them. Apologies first to my 'kaladkaran' friends for not being able to attend the bday bash at Ginza.

About a month ago, I received an invite to join a photoshoot EB at Yamanashi Prefecture. It's quite 5 hours away from my place but still I eagerly participated in order to meet great photohobbyists and Flickr friends: Ate Maki (aka Maki_c30D), Manong Crispee (RoadRunner) and Totomai (Totomai -- nobody knows his first name), among others.

Yamanashi is quite a very provincial place. But in exchange for a 'livelier' place, one would enjoy nature's beauty in Japan, quite rare with a highly industrialized country. Really now, Japan takes very good care of its environment. Yamanashi is quite popular for tourists who would want to view Mount Fuji from different scenic lakes around the area. Not to mention National parks, wineries, hiking camps and a whole lot more.

Using the seasonal ticket, Seishun 18 Kippu (Youth 18 Ticket), one could travel within Japan via JR trains for a discounted price (good for a day). And so, forming a group of 5, we went to Ate Maki's place for an overnight prior to the lunch-photoshoot EB the next day (Sunday). In fact, 2 of our companions that day -- Kate and Alaine just had a weeklong 'Japan Tour'-- from Tokyo to Kyoto and back.

The main venue was at the man-made Tokuma Falls near Ate Maki's place. Since it was a photoshoot EB, everyone got prepared and we even had models for portrait shots. Special thanks to Shaffie, for bringing his friend Hitomi who's quite an experienced model. Other female photographers in the group were also converted into being models, completely adorned with yukatas and Filipiniana dresses.

One other great thing about the EB was food! Daing na bangus, Laing, tilapia, ihaw-ihaw, kare-kare, salad, etc etc. Philippine food at its best! Last time I ate "Philippine food" was at the Independence day celebration at Oji Park, but all I ordered was meat on a stick so I guess that shouldn't count.

Unfortunately, it started to rain at about 4pm and so the final stages of the 'fashion shoot' was a bit stumped. We also hurried to catch up with the 6:10pm train, eventually reaching home at about 11:30pm. Whew!

It was a fun bonding experience. Special thanks to Ate Maki who's an eager host (part 3? hehe) and Manong Ben (diak nga nalaing ag ilocano, nalipatakon -- funny when he speaks to me in Ilocano, my mind gets stuck into answering in Nihonggo :P ) who are actually moderators of an online Filipino community forum; thus, considered to be the organizers of the event.

Hats off to the genki-sweet-smart-funny-loving couple Rad&Rya, for guiding us through in Shizuoka. To my travelmates: Sonny (TF photodad), Poulain (Lomo Princess), Shaffie (official photographer of Hitomi), Hitomi (half-Filipina, half-Japanese model) and Atty R-yo (The islander). Quite interesting too that I met blogger R-yo on this event. He's even Landbank Tokyo's hotshot.

I'm thinking of separating the portrait shots, photography sessions from the normal outing shots. So here goes, enjoy!

EDIT: hmm... since my supposed entry is long, I'm putting it up under blog instead of in photos. LOL

pics to be uploaded tomorrow... probably the first part. Quite a busy week, unfortunately...

I remember last time we went to the beach, Ramil warned us not to take pictures of children. The Japanese are overprotective of children and there seems to be a law against photographing random kids. It is quite understandable since their are pedophiles around but this also limits the subjects for photographers.

Kids are great photographic subjects as they can easily show elements of joy, sorrow, innocence, etc not to mention that they are usually cute. Good thing my shots with kids before did not offend a parent. Generally it's quite a challenge to take pictures of random people, and that's one of the main reasons why I needed longer lens.

Photo shows a kid looking down below towards the small stream, watching the fishes swim by.
